What is carrageenan?

This is a phenomenal ingredient, well worth writing a short story about. It has a whole host of uses, most of which are extremely beneficial to our health and safety when eating. One thing you need to know about carrageenan right from the start is that it is derived directly from seaweed. The process of extracting this ingredient from the seaweed, already well-known as a healthy source of natural vitamins and minerals, is that it is entirely organic. From there on, it is compounded usually to powder form and distributed for everyday commercial use.

Today, carrageenan serves as the perfect vegan alternative to the use of gelatin which is derived from animal products. This ingredient, carrageenan that is, is used to set desserts, retain the moisture in a variety of cooked meats and suspends the chocolate in the chocolate flavored milk and thus prevents it from separating. It keeps food delicious and helps to keep it fresh for use longer. There you go. Another organic practice. The use of this ingredient eliminates or reduces the need to waste food. It can be used to flavor our organically prepared winter stews. And why not use seaweed for vegetable pots. Naturally and organically prepared, it is safe anyway. And it is also healthy. Seaweed contains three essential vitamins, namely; vitamins A, B and C. it is also a rich source of calcium. This is ideal for those consumers who have made conscious decisions to go vegan. They might also have in mind those poor fishing communities around the globe who are no longer allowed to or able to fish the way they used to.


Special fishing quotas are hard to come by, and when they are snatched, they remain sparse in comparison to the stocks that fishing trawlers used to be allowed to haul in. taking to seaweed harvesting would be the perfect antidote to this bleakness. Fishing communities do not need to be uprooted and relocated to urban areas where there can be no guarantee that they will find meaningful work. Meaningful work is right on their doorstep. It is meaningful in more ways than one. Seaweed is good for the environment too.

It helps reduce harmful carbons in the earth’s atmosphere and cleans the ocean of phosphorus and nitrogen. More organic products, not just for food consumption, are being produced from seaweed in light of its wholesale natural benefits.
